PRESCRIPTION CHARGES

MOST ADULTS IN ENGLAND HAVE TO PAY PRESCRIPTION CHARGES

Some items are always free, including contraceptives or if you have certain medical conditions or are Pregnant.

The current prescription charge is £9.65 per item. This is a flat fee, set by the Department of Health and Social Care irrespective of the cost of the medication. It is important to note some items may incur more than one charge.

A prescription prepayment certificate (PPC) could save you money on NHS prescription costs:

  • 3-month PPC costs £31.25

  • 12-month PPC is £111.60

  • 12-month PPC for hormone replacement therapy (HRT) only is £19.30 (The HRT PPC covers an unlimited number of certain HRT medicines for 12 months, regardless of why they are prescribed)

THE BENEFITS OF PREPAYMENT PRESCRIPTION CHARGES

This will be the cost regardless of how many items are dispensed during the length of the PPC. You can apply for a PPC in the followings ways:

  • Apply via the NHS Prescriptions site. You can pay by card, or by direct debit if you'd prefer to spread the cost.

  • Drop in and collect a form from our Pharmacy or

  • alternatively you can call 0300 330 1341.

To use it straight away, you can get your certificate by email, or you can print it after you've applied, then show us your certificate details when collecting your prescription.

If you decide you will purchase a PPC following collection of your prescription, do inform the Pharmacy staff so they can write you out a NHS receipt, which will allow you to reclaim the proportional cost for that time. It is important to note that your PPC must be backdated to include the date you collected your prescription in order for you to qualify for a refund for your prescription costs.
